Praxis Preparation and Supports

University of South Carolina – Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency is a residency graduate program designed for professionals that hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than education. We are seeking individuals who are interested in transitioning from their current profession into the important position of certified teacher with one of our partner school districts (Colleton, Florence 3, Marlboro, and Orangeburg) in rural South Carolina communities. During the 18-month program, Carolina Teaching Residents will be provided both professional and financial support as they are immersed in the experience of teaching while simultaneously pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education.

Prepare to Pass the Praxis

Welcome to the Praxis II - Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Test. This page contains useful links, tips, and study guides for anyone who is preparing to take the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Test.

I am interested in becoming a Carolina Transition to Teaching Resident. What do I need to know about Praxis tests?

Praxis tests, given by the non-profit Educational Testing Services (ETS), are used to measure knowledge and skills needed to become a teacher. There are a multitude of Praxis tests centered on content areas and grade levels. They are required by many state departments of education as a component of state licensure. In South Carolina, the state department of education requires a person to pass specific Praxis tests to earn state licensure. Click HERE to learn which Praxis tests you may need to take.

To be accepted as a Carolina Transition to Teaching Resident, you must attempt (not pass) the 5000 series Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test. Additional Praxis support will be provided to those selected for the residency program; however, all Praxis requirements will need to be met before full acceptance to the graduate school can be awarded.

What do I need to know before I take the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test?

*Prices may change - please check to the ETS website

You should know that you can take the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test as one larger and longer bundled exam or you can take each content area component as separate tests.

Think about…

  • Time - What is your testing stamina? Focus?

  • Location - You can take your Praxis tests at a testing location OR at your home. Before you choose home, think about family, pets, and interruptions. Can you be sure you have uninterrupted times?

  • Content - How are you performing on the practice tests? Do you feel comfortable testing on all four different content areas at the same time or do you think you should study and test on one area at a time?

  • Cost - There is a large initial up front difference in cost. $170 to take the bundled test or $240 to take each content separately.

Take time to think through all of these factors before signing up for the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test.

What should I know about registering for the tests?

Be sure to have the codes for the schools, districts, and/or state departments of education you want your test scores sent to as score recipients. You must enter the code(s) when you register. If you try to do this at a later date, ETS will charge to send out your scores.

If you are applying to Carolina Transition to Teaching, be sure to enter these codes when you register for EACH test:

University of South Carolina - 5818

South Carolina State Department of Education - 8108

Carolina CAP - 1026
