Carolina Transition to Teaching Timeline

University of South Carolina – Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency is a residency graduate program designed for professionals that hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than education. We are seeking individuals who are interested in transitioning from their current profession into the important position of certified teacher with one of our partner school districts (Colleton, Florence 3, Marlboro, and Orangeburg) in rural South Carolina communities. During the 18-month program, Carolina Teaching Residents will be provided both professional and financial support as they are immersed in the experience of teaching while simultaneously pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education.

  • Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency is a 18-month residency program beginning in the summer and with the MEd earned by the following summer.

    ● Summer Semester

    ● Official start to the Carolina Transition to Teaching Residency

    ● Attend Orientation

    ● Complete first Graduate Course (CCAP required course)

    ● Participate in Summer STEM Institute

    ● Attend Praxis II Test Preparation Support

    ● Fall Semester

    ● Co-teach in elementary schools 3 days a week

    ● Complete Graduate coursework (including a CCAP required course)

    ● Attend Praxis II: ELA/Reading and Science Preparation Support

    ● Complete Praxis II: ELA/Reading and Science tests (December/January)

    ● Spring Semester

    ● Co-teach in elementary schools 4 days a week

    ● Complete Graduate coursework

    ● Attend Praxis II: Mathematics and Social Studies Preparation Support

    ● Graduate with MEd (May)

    ● Attend professional learning (May-June)

    ● Complete Praxis II: Mathematics and Social Studies tests (June)

    ● Summer Semester

    ● Attend Praxis II Preparation Support (as needed)

    ● Pass Praxis II

    ● Complete Darkness to Light Training

    ● Apply for Initial Alternative State Teaching Licensure through CarolinaCAP

  • Carolina  Transition to  Teaching Residency  is a teacher preparation  program that immerses teacher residents in the  life of a teacher through extensive, school-based experiences  within rural schools and rural school  communities.

    ● Graduates are First Year Teachers earning Master’s Degree Salary with their Alternative Certification; beginning year 1 of 3 year commitment to school district

    ● Complete at least 3 micro-credentials by the end of June (4 in final year)

    ● Prepare for Praxis PLT test

    ● Earn Overall Met on the SCTS 4.0 Evaluation by your school administrator

    ● Submit components through CarolinaCAP to complete permanent state licensure

  • Carolina Teaching Residents  are coached, guided, and supported  throughout their  residency in a  manner that prepares them to be responsive educators within  localized rural contexts. These supports attend to the relational, logistical, and conceptual aspects of teaching and learning. Carolina  Transition to  Teaching Residency  provides financial supports to residents during the 18-month graduate program.
